The Barossa is the best place in the world to make wines with big,
rich robust flavours – and it happens to be where I live.

The Barossa Valley is one of the richest and best known regions for winemaking and viticulture.
The first vineyards were planted in the early 1800’s based on the knowledge that the rich soils
would be able to produce outstanding crops for years to come. Time is the proof – a couple
of centuries down the track the vineyards, the wines and the culture rich in history
continue to be an inspiration to all that live and play in the Barossa.

Murray Street Vineyards' Approach

We aim to bridge the gap somewhat between New World and Old World practices by
minimizing human intervention and taking a more wholistic approach to the wine production
process from the vineyard through to the bottle.

The vineyards are organically managed and dry grown, encouraging the roots of each vine to
reach for the bedrock and tell the story of the Barossa’s ancient soils – striving to express the
individual place each vine grows.

Our wines are, on the whole, earthy and structured to express the vibrancy
of fruit for which the Barossa Valley is world famous.

The ‘Murray Street’ Vineyards

Gomersal Vineyard

The development of this vineyard in 2001 was the beginning of the journey for
Murray Street Vineyards. We set about planting 90 acres of vineyard in soil that brought much
excitement to everyone involved in the project. Planting a vineyard on soils as extreme and old
as those of the Gomersal Region is extraordinary and to think that the vines may outlive
even our grandchildren is extremely humbling.

Location: Gomersal Road, Gomersal – on the north western ridge of the Barossa Valley.

Climate: Warm Summers, Cool Winters with nighttime temperatures ranging from -2ºC to 30 ºC,
and daytime temperatures 12 ºC to 45 ºC.

Rainfall: Average 400mm per annum.

Soil Type: Ah, that’s what makes it so exciting. They vary quite dramatically as you tour
around the vineyard. We begin with re clay over calcerte and slate bedrock moving to more rocky
weathered slate (the bottom of an ancient glacier). Over the hill the soils are deep
sandy loam and black clays.

Varieties Planted: Predominately Shiraz, Viognier, Marsanne, Zinfandel .

Aspect: 2/3rds North-South rows and 1/3rd east-west slopes ranging from southeast to west.

Greenock Vineyard

These 35 acres of vineyard frame our Winery and Tasting Room. Originally this site was home
to the Nenke family with vines planted in the 1940’s. Since that time vineyard plantings have
been developed with the latest 8 acres of Mataro planted as bush vine in 2004.
This vineyard is dry grown and as a result provides wines sourced from
this vineyard with a unique seasonal character.

Location: Murray Street, Greenock – on the north west side of the Barossa.

Climate: Warm Summers, Cool Winters with nighttime temperatures ranging from -2ºC to 30 ºC,
and daytime temperatures 12 ºC to 45 ºC.

Rainfall: Average 500mm per annum.

Soil Type: Deep red clay with the occasional pockets of ironstone and sandy loam.

Varieties Planted: Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Semillon .

Aspect: East west rows on a southerly facing slope.
